In January had what I thought was a minor cold, went to the doctor when it didn't go away after a week. They said it was a virus get it more time. Another week goes by, do some blood tests and a chest x-ray. I call the nurse for test results, she said they are totally normal/ found out later from a different doc that it wasn't normal for someone with suppressed immunity. The following Monday, still sick , can hear wheezing and crackles, had a RN friend listen to my lungs, she said go to a doctor your lungs sound terrible. I go to the doctor, they give me a z-pack and an inhaler. I take all of the medication, 7 days later, still can hear wheezing and am short of breath when I walk further than across the room. I am so sick of being sick. I have been off from work for a month, sick leave will be running out soon. Am worried about keeping my job. I left a message at the doctor's office that I am not any better, so far no reply.  I do not want to have to make another appointment. Has anybody else gotten a cold/ bronchitis that refuses to go away, do you think it is related to my suppressed immune system? I take 3mg of pred and 100 of azp, plus my diabetes meds.

Hi Sherry
I know some of the others have also suffered like you with colds etc that have taken ages to go away. I think it may as you say to do with the suppressed immune system. I have just been in hopsital for four days with the sickness bug going around, my consultant told me if we catch anything it will usually be worse than others get it.
I know how you feel about going to the doctors, but if I was you I would go back as if the bronchitis hasn't gone it could get worse
take care

Hi Sherry,
Same story, z pack and inhaler.  Did not get better, back to doc and put on a big dog antibiotic. avelox.  It took me three weeks to feel human again.  Nasty bugs this year.  My G.P. always give me at least four or five days longer since the A.I.H.  We just don't have those little men on white horses helping us on the inside.  I say get back to doctor.  Hope you feel better very soon.  Please let us know.

Hi Sherry,
Sorry you have been feeling so sick. I also got sick 4-5 days ago and it's a really nasty one....it feels like the flu to me.....I have a really bad bronchial cough, fever, body aches, headache and congestion....feel just horrible! I also wonder if being on immune-suppressants makes it harder to fight off an infection, and wondered if lowering our dose temporarily is ever suggested by any docs out there? Antibiotics don't help with viral infections, only bacterial ones, so if this is mainly a viral attack, would it possibly lengthen the illness to take antibiotics, since some believe they lower your natural immunity? I also feel confused about whether it's ok or not to take "immune boosters" when sick....alternative formulas like Zinc lozenges, Echinacea, Wellness formula, Host defense, etc, etc....There seems to be some controversy about using immune booster with Autoimmunity, but shouldn't we get some extra help if we are fighting a virulent virus?
Take care,
Zanna

Zanna,
I take nothing over the counter.  To be honest I never did. But, I would check with doctor first.
Get well you two,
Judy

Thanks everyone for the replies. The Doctor on Monday put me on high dose  pred. on a titration schedule till I get back to my usual dose of 3mg.( he consulted with the hepatology clinic) To reduce the inflammation in my lungs. I am feeling much better now. Still using the inhaler a little. He felt that a month of coughing irritated my lungs , which gave me a temp asthma attack. I should be back to work by the end of the week. I am sure my low immunity didn't help me any. My FNP at the hepatology clinic, doesn't think it played a part in the length of my illness.

Hi Sherry,
Good to hear that you are feeling better.  Yes, that coughing for a month sure takes it toll.  I remember my sides hurt so bad from the cough, it felt like someone had hit me there.
I do not agree with the nurse.  Just read some past post.  I always say we can not just catch a cold like a normal person.  If we have dampened our immune systems then I think (just me talking) that it is a no brainier that it hits us harder.  Who cares at least you feel better and that is all that counts.

Zanna, do hope you will follow suite.
Thinking of you both,
Judy

Hi Sherry

Have got to say that I'm sure our low immune system means we are hit harder when we get colds/virus's. Almost all on here will say that it takes them much longer to get over them.

Am glad to hear you are feeling a bit better, Zanna I hope you get better soon.

Take care

Hi Sherry

So sorry to hear you've been ill so long but good news that you're feeling a bit better now. I'm sure things hit us a bit harder. I had a stomach bug a few weeks ago and am still trying to get back on my feet again from it.

Zanna, hope you're feeling a bit better now too?

You guys are so sweet to check on me. Sherry I hope you are feeling better. I've been coughing up a storm, bed-ridden all week, and still feel sick, but there have been real improvements. The worst of the flu symptoms have subsided...fever came down to normal yesterday. Taking Tamiflu really did help I think, along with antibiotics...I wish I'd started these meds 2 days earlier. We'll talk to my doctor again today and he might want to listen to my lungs.
Thanks for asking.
love Zanna

At least some improvement Zanna.  I tell you when it got me it was just all about time.  Lots of green tea and honey.  Rest, rest, rest.  But that crap won't leave until it is ready.  So, just make this all about Zanna and hang on the sofa with tons of books and movies.  Get well soon.  Judy

Sherry, also am thinking of you and hope you are feeling better.

Now you two get better and that is an order.
Love,
Judy

Hi Sherry and Zanna,
Glad you are both on the mend.
There are so many horrible bugs about at the moment. They really seem nastier then other years. I was ill round christmas time and it took me 3 weeks to feel a bit better.
Do keep us updated.

Though still coughing and sniffling and weakened, I'm definitely feeling improvements today. I got dressed in real clothes for the first time in a week! However, now it's my daughter Acacia's turn, poor darling.....she's feels real sick, her fever started last night ....we got her on Tamiflu today, so maybe she can get over it a little faster than I did. She suffers more physical pain with a flu than average, due to her chronic underlying pain, Fibromyalgia and rheumatic & neurological pain in her knees and lower legs from Sjogren's disease.
Healing to all,
Zanna
